Lutron joins Zigbee Alliance board of directors; boosts development of IoT standards for residential and commercial products

The Zigbee Alliance announced Tuesday that Lutron Electronics has joined its Board of Directors. Lutron’s participation at the board level demonstrates its commitment to working alongside other highly regarded IoT leaders to together bring practical, intuitive wireless experiences to users in residential and commercial settings.

What began as a two-product company, Lutron has grown into an internationally successful smart lighting and shading control provider that offers more than 15,000 products for residential and commercial spaces. From single-light dimmers to robust lighting and shading control solutions and high-performance lighting fixtures, the company sells products in more than 100 countries – and in the U.S. alone, Lutron products save an estimated 100 billion kWh of electricity, or approximately US$1 billion in utility costs per year.

The Zigbee Alliance is the foundation and future of the Internet of Things. Established in 2002, its wide-ranging global membership collaborates to create and evolve universal open standards for connected products transforming the way the connected world operates. With members’ diverse expertise, robust certification programs, and a full suite of open IoT solutions, Zigbee is leading the movement toward a more intuitive, imaginative, and useful world.

The Zigbee Alliance board of directors is comprised of executives from Amazon, Comcast, Huawei, The Kroger Co., Landis+Gyr, LEEDARSON, Legrand, Lutron Electronics, MMB Networks, NXP Semiconductors, Schneider Electric, Signify (formerly Philips Lighting), Silicon Labs, SmartThings, Somfy, Texas Instruments and Wulian.

“Lutron has a history of impressive innovation, smart business decisions, and respect for environmental impact,” said Tobin Richardson, President and CEO, Zigbee Alliance. “They’re an ideal addition to the esteemed collection of companies that currently comprise our board, our collective goals and interests, and the individual representatives that dedicate their time, resources, and energy to the open standards charge.”

“Lutron is focused on taking care of the customer and delivering value with superior goods and services,” said Pekka Hakkarainen, Ph.D., vice president, government and industry relations, Lutron. “We are passionate about creating great customer experiences that promote comfort and enhance well-being both in the home and workplace.”

Paramount to Lutron’s investment in and dedication to this industry-driven standards group is the commonality between the Zigbee Alliance vision and values and Lutron’s founding principles of benefiting its customers and improving the way the world lives, works, and plays. “We look forward to working with the Zigbee Alliance board to help shape the future of the IoT and deliver even more value to our customers,” Hakkarainen said.
