The Industrial Internet Consortium debuts Smart Buildings Challenge to collaborate with end-users for targeted IoT solutions

The Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC) announced the Smart Buildings Challenge, a program designed to give smart building technology suppliers the ability to collaborate with customers to create targeted, outcome-based solutions for smart buildings. The Challenge presents contestants with a set of smart building problems faced by building operators and investors, as well as a set of parameters required of the solutions.

Technology suppliers will develop solution proposals, alone or with partners, and compete to deploy pilot implementations to fulfill the requirements outlined by the challenge. A jury will select the winners from the pool of entries at the end of the Challenge. Prizes for winners will include the opportunity to deliver a live Proof of Concept in a shopping mall supported by Deka and ECE.

The Smart Buildings Challenge is one of the  IoT Challenges co-organized with the Trusted IoT Alliance. The Challenges are open to the industry vendors, organizations, teams and individuals worldwide and are designed to advance and validate industrial IoT applications and solutions.

Initial use cases for the Smart Buildings Challenge include Smart Space Flow Analytics using tracking, zones and anonymized tracking; Smart Metering in multi-tenant commercial buildings using smart metering, energy consumption and focus on electric energy; Smart Automated Building using HVAC, Control Technical equipment, demand oriented control of equipment and sustainability; and Smart Building Dashboard using management tool, sales tool, overview, digital twin and augmented reality.

“The IoT Challenges are an excellent opportunity for building operators and investors to address complex technologies in the industrial IoT that they haven’t resolved,” said Dr. Richard Soley, executive director, IIC. “The intent of the IoT Challenges is to create interest around emerging IoT use cases and to help bring new products to market.”

Principal Partners define the Smart Buildings Challenge entry requirements and technical parameters.

Principals include ECE, which develops, builds and manages shopping centers and realizes commercial properties such as corporate headquarters, office and industrial buildings, logistics centers, hotels, and residential properties.

With approximately 200 shopping centers under its management, ECE is the largest shopping center operator in Europe; and Deka Immobilien, a  specialist for real estate investments within the Deka Group. Established in 1966, the business has grown steadily, expanding the range and scope of its real estate investments. As such, Deka Immobilien ranks globally amongst the most active real estate investors with approximately 500 properties in office, retail, hotel and logistics spread over 25 countries on five continents.

Contestants will compete to design and submit solutions. During the design process, contestants will participate in hackathons, workshops and reverse pitches worldwide.

Enabling Technology Partners will offer their technologies to contestants for use in their solutions. Enabling Technology Partner positions are still available; the deadline for entries is Aug. 30, 2019.

The initial Enabling Technology Partner is Bosch, Bosch Building Technologies, an international supplier of products and systems for security, safety and communication. The Smart Buildings Challenge takes place from Aug. 30, 2019 through Feb. 1, 2020.

Winners will be announced and awarded at Bosch Connected World 2020 in Berlin, Germany, which runs from Feb. 19 – 20, 2020.
