Silicon Labs wireless technology helps strengthen smart home monitoring; IoT sensor detects potential household hazards

Silicon Labs and Notion have collaborated on a battery-powered IoT smart home sensor that detects water leaks, smoke, carbon monoxide, temperature changes and motion across doors, garages and windows.

The Notion Sensor is built on the Silicon Labs Wireless Gecko platform providing an energy-friendly wireless system-on-chip (SoC) solution with flexible multiprotocol connectivity.

Silicon Labs’ silicon, software and solutions aim to create a smarter, more connected world. Its technologies are shaping the future of the Internet of Things, Internet infrastructure, industrial automation, consumer and automotive markets, while its engineering team creates products focused on performance, energy savings, connectivity and simplicity.

Notion is a home monitoring solution, powered by an all-in-one smart home sensor, which sends alerts to a homeowner’s mobile device for the things they care about most – water leaks, smoke alarms, temperature changes and doors, garages and windows opening and closing.

Notion introduced its smart home monitoring solution in 2017. Since then, several insurance companies, including State Auto Insurance, Travelers and Hippo, have partnered with Notion to encourage homeowners to take a more proactive approach to home maintenance and monitoring by offering the easy-to-install Notion starter kit.

Designed with multi-functional sensors, the Notion kit allows homeowners to detect multiple incidents at once in different locations throughout their home – making it a complete single solution for home monitoring. By installing Notion, homeowners can receive a smart home discount on their home insurance policy with participating insurance companies, helping to reduce their premiums and providing peace of mind.

Powered by two AAA batteries, each sleek, Oreo-sized Notion sensor can be placed anywhere within the house with a convenient peel-and-stick application. After connecting to a Wi-Fi network through a bridge, each sensor is up and running, and all monitored zones within a home can be viewed through a convenient smartphone app.

“Notion has created a valuable smart home solution for both homeowners and insurance companies, demonstrating the transformative power IoT can have across vertical markets,” said Matt Saunders, vice president of marketing and applications, IoT Products, at Silicon Labs. “Notion is a great example of how the Wireless Gecko platform eases design complexity for our customers, offering the benefits of low power consumption, robust connectivity, and best-in-class wireless range and performance in a single-chip solution.”

“Smart home devices are driving a new wave of change in the insurance industry, with Notion’s all-in-one sensor leading the charge as we help consumers easily monitor their households and insurance companies anticipate problems before they arise,” said Brett Jurgens, CEO, Notion. “Silicon Labs’ wireless technology enables our product developers to focus more of their time on design simplicity and ease of use for Notion customers.”
