CalAmp debuts Instant Crash Notification (ICN) service for connected car segment

CalAmp recently launched Instant Crash Notification (ICN), its proprietary, patented and patent-pending automated First Notice of Loss (aFNOL) services suite planned for rollout this year. The ICN service can be integrated with a broad set of CalAmp devices including those currently deployed.

By leveraging CalAmp’s PULS (Programming Update Logic System) platform to upgrade device firmware and settings over-the-air, customers who subscribe to the service can simply “switch-on” ICN to broaden the value-added services offered to their customers and immediately realize the benefits that comes with a reliable crash discrimination and notification system.

ICN fully automates the motor vehicle accident event notification process by providing users with immediate notification of a collision, as well as extensive reporting of crash data, delivered via email, SMS (text) and directly through an Application Programming Interface (API).

ICN is a high-value, connected car application developed for insurers, self-insured fleets, and vehicle operators concerned with optimizing fleet risk management. ICN offers users the best of both worlds: OEM-level crash reporting performance combined with aftermarket flexibility and control. ICN can be offered as a stand-alone service or can be layered on top of a comprehensive vehicle management program to provide added value to both the asset owner and the driver.

The ICN service can be enabled on millions of CalAmp crash-grade telematics devices already deployed and in service. This provides existing and future customers with an advanced, reliable, off-the-shelf solution for numerous applications, without the burden of internal development, and enables them to achieve faster time-to-market.

As a standalone connected car service or integrated synergistically with other applications, ICN offers an automated, reliable vehicle accident reporting system designed for a broad set of users including consumers, insurers, fleet managers, vehicle leasing and finance companies.

With its crash discrimination, accurate incident data such as crash time and location, and automatic notification of an accident, ICN is a unique and revolutionary service that provides a sense of safety and security for consumers while improving insurance claims management efficiency. ICN also discriminates true crash events from other impact signatures caused by road hazards, potholes, speed bumps and door slams.

Whenever a crash is detected, ICN immediately provides critical data such as location, date, time, Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and collision severity on a five-point scale to specified recipients, thereby automating the crucial FNOL process.

ICN notifies insurers and the driver’s designated recipient within seconds with key information about the accident, such as location, date, time, VIN and collision severity. ICN+ is an extensive report providing comprehensive crash data for accident reconstruction, while the CalAmpDENT offering provides predictive physical damage estimates in near real-time.

With the CalAmpBITE analytics solution, bodily injury prediction and automated notification enable fast emergency response and help mitigate fraud associated with injury claims. Time to close a bodily injury claims case can be reduced, greatly lowering total costs for insurance providers. ICN can be offered as a stand-alone service or can be layered on top of a comprehensive vehicle management program to provide added value to both the asset owner and the driver.

The CalAmp engineering team responsible for developing ICN has deep experience in OEM vehicle development and safety systems engineering. The single biggest impediment to deployment of aFNOL systems and broad adoption by users is system reliability. Insurance providers and fleet operators must be able to rely on the inbound report as a real accident, and not a false alarm. Its reliability ensures that fleets and insurers can rely on ICN’s immediate accident reports to deliver improved policyholder experience, lower costs and gain competitive advantage.

“Insurance providers are looking for a better way to mitigate risk and reduce the costs associated with the claims management process. At the same time, quick and accurate claims processing and settlement provides customers with a satisfying experience to boost policyholder retention rates. ICN is unique because of its innovative event discrimination capabilities and reporting reliability,” said Justin Schmid, CalAmp’s senior vice president and general manager of the Telematics Solutions business.
